An NP B&B?They say truth is stranger than fiction. Generally, when people speak of Bed and Breakfasts, they refer to for profit businesses which provide rooms and breakfasts for their visiting patrons. In the Bed and Breakfast world, non-profit generally refers to a Bed and Breakfast Association which helps promote the Bed and Breakfast members of that association. The number of non-profit bed and breakfasts in the United States is extremely small. We have one here in Raywood, Texas. All proceeds from our bed & breakfast reservations, as well as retreat bookings, underwrite youth programs and instructional workshops.Master Gardeners’ TouchWhere once tallow trees grew, now stands Langetree DUCK FARM Retreat & Eco Center, various gardens, a labyrinth, lawns, a pond, memorials and master gardeners’ influence. Thanks to Nell, Bo, and Doc’s donations and constant support, we now have pyracanthum, oaks, sego palms, and other trees. Nancy and Al have provided to various participants, classes at the Eco Center including landscape techniques, labyrinth planning and lay-out, living wreath workshop, and most recently, a propagation workshop. Master Gardeners help make the DUCK FARM, and learning, beautiful and fun!Part of our Eco Center mission is to provide visitors various methods and techniques used in land sustainability. Our current propagation area is just the beginning of great plans. We feel blessed to have Texas Extension certify the DUCK FARM as a place Master Gardeners can acquire hours. From tallow trees, to where we are today. What will the future bring? Come and see. Make you master gardening influence felt, as we grow together. Hibiscus Donation Provides Propagation WorkshopMembers of DUCK FARM volunteer staff (AmeriCorps*VISTA workers) received propagation training from fellow VISTA workers. Al and Nancy Brandli (who are also Master Gardeners) acquired hibiscus cuttings donated from a community gardener. In a workshop format, Eco Center VISTAs then learned propagation techniques as they divided and potted hibiscus cuttings. Workshops, such as propagation, are also available to the public. If you’re interested in having a workshop related to gardening or landscaping techniques, please contact us.LAT (Land owners Association of Texas)In a crowded session, local LAT members and others who traveled from out of state for this one day conference, participated in an open discussion with Harris County, [] regarding land protection and estate planning. Participants also enjoyed a lunch of soup and bread, provided by the conference host, Langetree DUCK FARM Retreat and Eco Center. Any who were unable to attend the workshop, but would like the informational booklet, “Land Loss Prevention Manual: Texas Edition 2005,” may contact the Liberty County chapter of LAT, at the Eco Center (936) 587-4325.Salute to 2005 with Family, Friends, and FunThe last two days of ‘05 were filled with music and dance, food and culture, and family and friends. Loved ones gathered in support and appreciation for fellowship and celebration on January 30th, for local military personnel who have served, or currently are serving, in Iraq. Celebrations at the DUCK FARM continued the next day, but in a different way, and with a different group of friends. This activity, led by AmeriCorps*VISTA worker Valencia Arceneaux, began with a short history of Kwanzaa. Drums, lights, food, and dancing filled the whole Kwanzaa celebration. |
